Detroit is the largest city in the Midwestern state of Michigan. Near Downtown, the Detroit Institute of Arts is famed for Diego Rivera murals inspired by the city’s long-standing ties to the auto industry, which earned it the nickname "Motor City." Detroit is also the birthplace of Motown Records, whose chart-topping history is on display at Hitsville U.S.A.  The Detroit Historical Museum's, Streets Of Old Detroit exhibition showcases more than 300 years of Detroit’s history.  The Henry Ford Museum and Greenfield Village is the largest indoor-outdoor history museum complex in the United States, located in Dearborn, MI.

Detroit is home to four major-league professional sports teams, all of which play in the Detroit metropolitan area. The Pistons, (NBA Basketball), play at the Palace of Auburn Hills. The Detroit Lions, (NFL Football), play at Ford Field in Detroit.  The Detroit Tigers, (MLB Baseball), play at Comerica Park in Detroit. The Red Wings, (NHL Hockey), play at Joe Louis Arena in Detroit.

The Spirit of Detroit is a 26-foot city monument that represents the city of Detroit.  The bronze statue was sculpted by Marshall Fredericks.  Mr. Fredericks served as the Royal Danish Consul for Detroit, MI from 1965 until 1995. In the statue’s left hand it holds a gilt bronze sphere, emanating rays to symbolize God, and in its right it holds a family group symbolizing all human relationships.  On the wall behind the sculpture the inscription 2 Corinthians (3:17) “Now the Lord is that Spirit: and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty,” along with both the symbols of the city and of the county.  On the plaque in front of the statue gives the inscription: “The artist expresses the concept that God, through the spirit of man is manifested in the family, the noblest human relationship.”
