Driver’s License

Renewal of Danish driver’s license

It is no longer possible to renew a Danish driver’s license at a Danish embassy or consulate abroad.

If you still have habitual residence (residence for a minimum of 185 days in a calendar year) in Denmark, you may apply for a new Danish driver’s license at a Citizen Service Center in Denmark. For more information, please see: Fornyelse af kørekort (borger.dk)

If you no longer have habitual residence in Denmark, you must apply for a driver’s license in the country where you live.

Lost or stolen Danish driver’s license:

If you are temporarily in the United States and your Danish driver’s license has been lost or stolen, you should:

  • Report the loss to the local U.S. police and request a police report
  • Contact the Danish Road Safety and Transport Agency (Færdselsstyrelsen) to request a declaration in English confirming that you have driving rights in Denmark. You can contact them by digital post or by email to [email protected]

For more information, please see: Kørekort i udlandet (internationalt kørekort) (borger.dk)

Driving in the United States without a valid driver’s license is at the driver’s own risk. It is up to the local police whether they recognize the declaration of driving rights in place of the original license.
