Two Commercial Advisors – Global Public Affairs
Would you like to work with some of the largest and most sustainable Danish companies on UN platforms in New York City? Are you interested in diplomacy, public affairs – in both the public and private sectors? If so, we may have an intriguing opportunity for you. We are currently seeking two new commercial advisors to join the Global Public Affairs Team at the Consulate General of Denmark in New York.
As part of the Trade Council, your role will involve working to enhance Danish export and diplomatic relations with the US and the multilateral community. The Global Public Affairs team in New York primarily advise Danish companies in matters related to the United Nations, headquartered in NYC. We collaborate across sectors with Danish companies, our client work is fee-based, with the team having an annual target.
As a commercial advisor, you will be responsible for project management of large-scale public affairs engagements related to the UN, other member states, as well as New York authorities and cultivate project opportunities for Danish companies.
The GPA Team in short
The team helps the private sector in engaging on UN platforms, including the UN General Assembly in close collaboration with the Danish UN Mission. Through these endeavours, we contribute to support the Danish strongholds outlined in the government’s action plan for economic diplomacy. Our mission is to promote Danish sustainable solutions to global problems.
In 2023, we hosted the Sustainability Summit NYC during the UN General Assembly, bringing together over 30 Danish commercial partners with global stakeholders, including ministers, leaders from the UN, and international companies.
Main tasks and responsibilities
- Advisory, research, develop, and present public affairs and business development strategies, and market intelligence to Danish companies and institutions, either on UN platforms or other opportunities in NYC.
- Organize and execute large-scale events, workshops, and delegations to and from Denmark.
- Specialize in the cross-section between governmental and corporate affairs, balancing national priorities and private sector interests.
- Handle a diverse portfolio of tasks, leading projects from development and pitch to execution – encompassing all event logistics.
- Map and manage key stakeholders in the U.S., globally, and within the United Nations, building and maintaining our network.
- Provide ministerial service during ministerial visits to New York, including organizing internal and external meetings, preparing talking points, speeches, and other necessary briefing materials.
Desired qualifications
Many different profiles could succeed in this team. We envision a highly structured project manager, a consultant-minded individual with a business school background, a public affairs or communications advisor, or someone with technical knowledge in one of our key sectors and an understanding of public affairs matters. Ideally, the team will be diverse, with members complementing each other.
- You have a relevant education and preferably a background in public affairs, corporate affairs, business development, communications, consulting, or a similar field.
- You possess insights into both business and the role of the private sector in addressing global challenges.
- Ability to quickly adapt to new agendas or sectors. Last year, the team worked on projects as diverse as water infrastructure, financing green energy, and public-private partnerships in health and biodiversity
- Proactive approach, problem solver, and solution-oriented
- Positive and open-minded and great collaborative skills
- Great interpersonal skills to understand and work within multi-stakeholder projects
- The ideal candidate has a political mind-set and strong analytical skills, coupled with curiosity and creativity to build knowledge in a global context of differentiating interests, priorities, and stakeholders. Also, the ability to develop networks in multiple Danish strongholds such as energy, life science, food, and agriculture
- Excellent command of English – both verbal and written.

Employment conditions
- You will be offered full time employment for 2 years on a local contract with the possibility of extension. Housing and relocation benefits are not provided as part of the employment and your spouse/partner is not eligible for a work permit.
- This is a full-time salary position - the Consulate General’s standard work week is 37 hours; but you are employed without an upper working hours’ limit. You will have a large degree of flexibility in organizing your own daily working hours.
- You will be entitled to 5 weeks (25 working days) of paid vacation days per year.
- As part of your salary, you will be covered by a workplace pension scheme.
- You will be offered reasonable coverage of sickness expenses. So will your spouse/partner and children under the age of 26 if you provide for him/her/them.
- The gross yearly salary for the position – for an employee subject to US income taxation – is 93,330$. For a tax-exempt employee (non-US) the yearly net salary is 74,660$. Depending on the candidate’s qualifications, an additional individual allowance may be added
The Consulate General of Denmark in New York
The Consulate General is part of the Danish Foreign Service and Denmark's official representation in New York and across the East Coast. We advise and assist in a number of areas – consular, commercial, investment and cultural – and we communicate to the US public on important topics of relevance to Denmark. The Consulate General consists of approx. 40 employees. You will be a part of the Consulate General’s Trade Team consisting of nine full time employed commercial advisors, three interns and the Head of the Trade. The Trade Council in North America consists of more than 75 employees and is represented at offices in Washington DC, New York City, Chicago, Houston, Toronto, Boston and Silicon Valley.
