The Embassy of Denmark in Washington, DC has an opening for a full time chef to join the Embassy’s Administration Department. You will be part of the team running the residence. The team consists of a residence Host/Administrative assistant, Cleaning assistant and the Ambassador’s assistant. The residence hosts representative events that among other things includes breakfasts, lunches, dinners and receptions for politicians, companies and other high level contacts. The residence is also used for cultural events to promote Danish design, music, art and architecture.  The Administration Department is responsible for maintaining the Embassy building and the surroundings together with providing professional service and transportation for the Ambassador, Embassy staff and guests. 

Main tasks and responsibilities as Chef

  • Running the kitchen in the residence in cooperation with the residence host, the external serving staff and the Ambassador’s PA.
  • Preparation, shopping and cooking for events in the Ambassador’s residence.
  • Budget and bookkeeping for the provision of food in cooperation with the Ambassador’s PA for all events in the residence.
  • Responsible for maintaining the residence kitchen in a sanitary excellent condition.
  • Perform other duties as assigned. 

Your day will be planned daily together with the Ambassador and residence staff. Working hours will be flexible depending on activities in the residence and Embassy and will include working during evenings. 

Required qualifications

  • Experience as a chef is required. Experience running a kitchen would be preferred, incl. manage the provision of food items.
  • An approachable personality and good communication skills are essential.
  • Must be flexible with working hours. 
  • Knowledge and experience with Danish or Nordic Cuisine would be an advantage but not a requirement.
  • Good English skills required.

Employment conditions

  • You will be offered full time employment for 3 years with the possibility of extension on a local contract.
  • You standard working hours will be 37 hours per week whereof approx. 10 hours a week will be between 5:00pm and 10:00pm (working hours activities in the residence and embassy).
  • You will be entitled to 25 days of paid vacation per year.
