Type of employment: Full-time employment for 3 years on a local contract with the possibility of extension
Starting date: 15th of June 2025 or as soon as possible thereafter
Location: Embassy of Denmark, 3200 Whitehaven St. N.W., Washington D.C. 20008, USA
Deadline for application: 6th of April, 2025
Are you passionate about foreign and development policy? The Embassy of Denmark in Washington D.C. is looking for an Advisor for Foreign and Development Policy. You will be part of the Embassy staff of around 60 employees. In your daily work, you will report to the Head of the Department for Foreign, Security, and Development Policy.
About the job
As advisor at the Embassy, you will help promote Denmark and Danish interests in the United States. You will be responsible for monitoring and reporting on developments in geographic and/or thematic areas of U.S. foreign and development policy.
An important part of your job will be to engage with the U.S. Administration and Congress based on Danish priorities. You must be able to work independently and be able to identify how developments in American foreign and development policy affect Danish interests. You will need excellent communication skills to engage with internal and external partners. As part of the job, you will be organising events and facilitating visits by Danish Government officials and parliamentarians.
The Department often operates with short deadlines, and colleagues juggle multiple tasks at the same time. Your portfolio will evolve according to policy developments and priorities. We expect you to be a team player and ready to engage in new tasks with a short notice – and across the Department and the Embassy if needed. At the same time, we offer insight into a broad range of policy areas and an opportunity to contribute to the development of American-Danish relations.
Required qualifications
- A university degree in political science, development studies, economy, law or other relevant areas.
- Preferably at least two years of experience in a relevant line of work.
- Interest in U.S. foreign and development policy.
- Strong academic credentials and analytical skills.
- Strong interpersonal and networking skills.
- Strong communications skills. Proficiency in Danish strongly preferred but not required.
- You must be adaptable and able to juggle many issues simultaneously.
- A team player who values a good working environment with focus on strong cooperation.
- Knowledge of American politics and business culture will be an advantage.
Employment conditions
- Full time employment for 3 years with the possibility of extension on a local contract based on the local Embassy Staff Rules.
- You will be employed with an average workweek of 37 hours, but you are employed without an upper working hours’ limit. This implies that you must work more than 37 hours a week if your work so requires without receiving compensation for overtime.
- You will be entitled to 25 days of paid vacation per year.
- Your salary will reflect your qualifications, relevant experience and proven work-related results.
- You will be offered a local health insurance with insurance premium partly covered with 20% personal coverage of premium.
- Benefits and other conditions will be based on the Embassy’s Staff Rules.
- The basic gross monthly salary for the position and a candidate with relevant qualifications and relevant work experience – for an employee subject to U.S. income taxation – is USD 5456. For a tax-exempt employee (tax exemption depending on U.S. visa status and citizenship) the monthly net salary will be USD 4527. Basic salary is subject to change if the candidate does not have the needed qualifications for the position. On top of the basic salary, there will be an additional allowance of 12% for the no upper working hours’ limit. Depending on the candidate’s qualifications and experience an additional individual allowance may be added.
