The Embassy of Denmark in Washington, D.C. plays a central role in strengthening political, commercial, and security ties between Denmark and the United States. Within the Department for Economic Diplomacy, the Embassy advances Danish interests across key sectors throughout the U.S. and Canada.
The defense industry is a strategic priority for Denmark, underpinning export growth, technological advancement, and national security. In an increasingly complex global security environment, the Embassy works to ensure that Danish defense companies are well positioned to succeed in the world’s most important defense market. The core mission is to support and strengthen the Danish defense industrial base by identifying and enabling concrete commercial opportunities and industrial cooperation in the U.S. and Canadian markets.
About the job
We are seeking a proactive, results-driven Commercial Advisor to join the North American Defense Industry Team. In this role, you will play a key part in identifying and advancing commercial opportunities for the Danish defense industrial base in the U.S. and Canadian markets.
You will operate in a complex ecosystem, engaging closely with industry leaders, military stakeholders, government institutions, research environments, and other strategic partners across multiple defense subsectors.
As Commercial Advisor, your responsibilities will include building and sustaining strong stakeholder relationships; advising Danish defense companies on market entry, expansion, and positioning in North America. You will be acting as a trusted intermediary to facilitate partnerships and concrete business opportunities as well as planning and participating in strategic events, delegations, and industry engagements. Your work will include analyzing market trends and procurement landscapes, supporting government relations and advocacy efforts, and delivering high-quality reporting and strategic insights to stakeholders in Denmark and North America.
Required qualifications
- Experience in the defense industry, government relations, international business, security policy, or related fields.
- Strong understanding of the North American defense landscape, including key government/institutional actors and industrial base.
- Proactive mindset with the ability to operate independently in complex environments.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with confidence engaging senior-level government, military, and industry stakeholders.
- Fluency in English; proficiency in Danish is a plus.
- Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively within a team.
Employment conditions
- Full time employment for 3 years with the possibility of extension on a local contract based on the local Embassy Staff Rules.
- You will be employed with an average workweek of 37 hours, but you are employed without an upper working hours’ limit. This implies that you must work more than 37 hours a week if your work so requires without receiving compensation for overtime.
- You will be entitled to 25 days of paid vacation per year.
- Your salary will reflect your qualifications, relevant experience and proven work-related results.
- You will be offered a local health insurance with insurance premium partly covered with 20% personal coverage of premium.
- Benefits and other conditions will be based on the Embassy’s Staff Rules.
- The basic gross monthly salary for the position and a candidate with relevant qualifications and relevant work experience – for an employee subject to US income taxation – is USD 5755. For a tax-exempt employee (tax exemption depending on US visa status and citizenship) the monthly net salary will be USD 4776. Basic salary is subject to change if the candidate does not have the needed qualifications for the position. On top of the basic salary, there will be an additional allowance of 12% for the no upper working hours’ limit. Depending on the candidate’s qualifications and experience an additional individual allowance may be added.
