The Consulate General of Denmark in New York is seeking to recruit 1–2 proactive and results-oriented candidates for the full-time position of Assistant Consular Officer in the Consular Department.
The Consulate General is part of the Danish Foreign Service and serves as Denmark’s official representation in New York. We provide advice and assistance in several areas — consular, commercial, investment, and cultural — and communicate with the U.S. public on topics of relevance to Denmark. The Consulate General consists of approximately 40 employees. You will join the Consular Team, which includes nine staff members, and report to the Head and Deputy Head of the team.
Job description
The Consular Team handles a wide range of matters, including consular assistance to Danish nationals across the U.S. East Coast and the processing of visa and residence permit applications for Denmark in the United States. Your primary responsibility will be to ensure that key functions are carried out efficiently on a daily basis. You will work alongside experienced consular officers to provide support and coordinate assigned duties.
Main tasks and responsibilities as Assistant Consular Officer
- Provide customer assistance to Danish nationals applying for passports at the counter
- Assist Danish nationals in need
- Enter data in internal systems related to passports, visas, and residence permits
- Process applications for passports, visas, and residence and/or work permits
- Respond to inquiries regarding Danish rules and regulations
- Perform daily clerical tasks, including scanning, copying, and archiving
- Occasionally assist Danish inmates
- Maintain constant awareness of consular and visa work as an important means of representing Denmark positively at all times
Required qualifications
- Excellent command of English and Danish, both oral and written
- Strong communication skills
- IT proficiency, with solid skills in Microsoft Office
- A structured mindset and strong planning and coordination abilities
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively
- Service-mindedness

Employment conditions
- Full-time employment for one year on local terms, with the possibility of extension
- Average workweek of 37 hours (including a 30-minute daily lunch break); however, the position is exempt from overtime compensation, and additional hours may be required during peak periods
- Five weeks (25 working days) of paid vacation annually
- Coverage under a workplace pension scheme
- Reasonable coverage of medical expenses, extended to your spouse/partner and dependent children under the age of 26
- Gross annual salary: USD 73,000 (for employees subject to U.S. income tax)
- For tax-exempt employees, the net annual salary is USD 58,400
- Depending on qualifications, an additional individual allowance may be granted
