Technical Wastewater Advisor in Chicago

The Trade Council of Denmark in North America’s Water Advisory strengthens the ties between the Danish and US water sectors. We share knowledge, ideas, and experiences with US counterparts and assist Danish water technology companies in the US market. We are looking for an Advisor with a solid business and technical understanding of the wastewater sector to join our wastewater team at the Consulate General of Denmark in Chicago.

As our new colleague, you will be part of our North American Water and Environment Team, consisting of ten advisors based in Washington, DC, Chicago, Houston, and Silicon Valley. Our mission is to inspire and encourage US utilities, cities, and states to adopt Danish solutions and technologies within the water sector.

In your role, you will lead and oversee the development and expansion of a new track on the East Coast, working closely with our wastewater team. Following the completion of the first year, you are expected to relocate to the Embassy of Denmark in Washington D.C. to continue your work.

Main tasks and responsibilities 

  • Develop and expand a new wastewater track on the East Coast in collaboration with your team members.
  • Engage in technical dialogue with US wastewater utilities and key stakeholders to understand their needs and priorities.
  • Assist U.S. stakeholders in understanding how Danish wastewater solutions can be effectively adapted to meet local needs.
  • Proactively identify and pursue opportunities for collaboration with U.S. utilities and other stakeholders.
  • Assist Danish companies and organizations in identifying and pursuing potential market opportunities within the US wastewater sector
  • Manage strategic outreach towards decision-makers and companies to bridge the gap between US and Danish stakeholders.
  • Organize and execute utility visits, workshops and delegations.

Required qualifications 

  • You have relevant experience from the wastewater sector – preferably through roles in business, utilities or research.
  • You are structured, efficient, outgoing, and able to handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Experience and knowledge of the Danish water sector are beneficial but not a requirement.
  • You have the ability to work independently, demonstrate a strong sense of responsibility, and can proactively contribute within a team.
  • You are able to navigate between various team interests and directions.
  • You have an excellent command of English (written and spoken).

Employment conditions

  • You will be hired as a “Technical Commercial Advisor” based at the Consulate General of Denmark in Chicago 
  • Starting date is July 1st 2024 or soon thereafter
  • You will be offered a two-year full time local employment contract with the possibility of extension. After the first year it is expected that you relocate to the Embassy of Denmark in Washington DC. 
  • Your contract is regulated according to “Staff Rules” of the Danish representations in the U.S.
  • Your salary will reflect qualifications, relevant work experience and proven work-related results
  • Other benefits include 5 weeks of paid vacation, and healthcare (80% employer contribution).
  • Approx. 80 days of travel per year in the US and to Denmark
