The Consulate General of Denmark in New York is seeking to recruit a pro-active and result-oriented candidate to fill a 6 months fixed term employment either as Consular Officer or as Assistant Consular Officer (depending on the qualifications and prior experience of candidate) at the Consular Department.

The Consulate General is part of the Danish Foreign Service (cf. below) and Denmark's official representation in New York. We advise and assist in a number of areas – consular, commercial, investment and cultural – and we communicate to the US public on important topics of relevance to Denmark. The Consulate General consists of approx. 40 employees. You will be hired as a part of the Consulate General’s Consular team consisting of 8 employees and you will refer to the Head and the Deputy Head of the Consular Team. 


Job description

The Consular team handles a wide range of matters from consular assistance to Danes abroad across the East Coast and handling applications for visa and residence permits for Denmark in the United States. Your job is to ensure that important functions are completed on a daily basis. You will work alongside experienced consular officers to provide support and coordinate duties as they are assigned.


Main tasks and responsibilities as Assistant Consular Officer

  • Provide customer assistance to Danish nationals applying for passports at the counter
  • Assist with data entry for various internal systems within passport, visa and residence permits
  • Answer inquiries about Danish rules and regulations
  • Provide daily clerical duties as required, which will include scanning, copying and archiving 
  • Occasionally provide assistance to Danish inmates
  • Constant awareness of the visa and consular work as an important tool to show the best of Denmark at any given time

  • Answer inquiries about Danish rules and regulations
  • Processing visa applications
  • Approve visa applications (this can only be done by an EU national)
  • Occasionally provide assistance to Danish inmates
  • Constant awareness of the visa and consular work as an important tool to show the best of Denmark at any given time 

Required qualifications

  • Excellent command of English  – both oral and written 
  • Excellent communication skills
  • IT proficiency and solid skills regarding the Microsoft Office program
  • A structured mind-set and excellent planning and coordination skills
  • Ability to work both independently and collectively.
  • Service-mindedness

For a position as Consular Officer previous experience of working with Schengen visa applications will be required


Desired qualifications

  • Command of one of the Scandinavian languages is not a requirement, but will be considered an advantage. 
  • Good motivation skills
  • A high degree of integrity and ability to handle stressful situations.
  • Good social skills

Employment conditions

  • You will be offered full time employment fixed for 6 months on local terms
  • You will be employed with a work week of – on average – 37 hours, including a 30 minutes daily lunch break, but you are employed without an upper hours’ working limit. This implies that you must work more than 37 hours a week if your work so requires without receiving compensation for overtime. You must expect longer working hours during peak periods
  • You will be entitled to 2½ weeks (12.5 working days) of paid vacation days during the 6 months of employment
  • As part of your salary you will be covered by a workplace pension scheme. 
  • You will be offered reasonable coverage of sickness expenses. So will your spouse/partner/children under the age of 26 if you provide for him/her/them.
  • The gross monthly salary for the position – for an employee subject to US income taxation – is $ 5,989 for a tax-exempt employee the net salary will be $ 4,790. Depending on the candidate’s qualifications - i.e. if they are sufficient to assume the role of Consular Officer -  an additional individual allowance can be added.
