Passports for Children (under the age of 18)

Please note that you need to make an appointment before both parents and the child/children can show up at the nearest possible representation. An appointment must be made for each child.

It is now possible to apply for passports for children under the age of 12 at honorary consulates and the Embassy in Washington, D.C. Biometric processing is not needed for this age group. See below for required documentation. 

Processing time for children's passports is approximately 4 weeks, 5 weeks during peak periods.

Documents to be submitted:

  1. ONE APPLICATION FORM PER PERSON, completed and signed.
    Download form.

  2. THE CURRENT PASSPORT. The Passport Office does not need to keep the passport and you may use it for travel until your new passport arrives.

  3. THE CHILD’S ORIGINAL BIRTH CERTIFICATE (both parents’ names must appear on the Certificate)

  4. BOTH parents must fill in and sign the consent section on page 3. If one parent has sole custody of the child, documentation to that effect MUST be produced.

    In case one or both parents are unable to appear in person, the declaration must be signed before a Danish authority or you can give digital consent for a passport to your child if you have a danish CPR number and NEM-ID. Your child does not need to have a Danish CPR number.

  5. THE CHILD and BOTH parents’ passports and Permanent Registration Cards/valid visas with I-94 online registration or US certificate of naturalization if parents became US citizens after September 1, 2015.

  6. ORIGINAL CERTIFICATE OF DANISH NATIONALITY of the Danish parent, who was born outside of Denmark or reacquired Danish citizenship after September 1, 2015. 

  7. PARENTS’ ORIGINAL MARRIAGE CERTIFICATE (If the father is the only Danish national and the child is born before July 1st,2014                  

  8. FEE.    New York: Debit or Credit Card ONLY.               
               Silicon Valley: Debit or Credit card ONLY. 
               Chicago: Debit or Credit Card ONLY.  
    All requested documents must be in Danish or English or a notarized English translation.

Please be advised that if you have a Danish CPR-number and are therefore registered in the CPR-Register, you must be registered as a Danish citizen. If you are registered with another nationality, you will not be able to apply for a new passport and will have to contact the “Folkeregister” in the municipality where you lived prior to leaving Denmark or where the registration took place.

EXTENSION: Extension of an expired passport is only possible if the expiration date is three months or less. A passport can only be extended once and for a maximum of 12 months.

If applying for a passport for a child under the age of 12 years at the Danish Embassy in Washington or at an Honorary Consulate the passport photo MUST be provided

If you cannot pick-up your passport, the passport will be sent to your home or business address - at your own risk - via Federal Express. In this case an additional fee will be charged in either cash or money order.

The Consulates General will take a digital photo. However, it may prove difficult to capture a suitable digital photo of children. It is therefore advisable to bring a normal passport photo to the Consulates General, which can then be scanned: requirements for passport photos.
