Junior Commercial Advisor - Food and Agriculture

The Consulate General of Denmark in Chicago is looking for a dedicated and dynamic advisor who is ready to take on an impactful role to develop business areas and bridge the gap between commercial interests in Denmark and the U.S. within the food & agriculture sector.


Job Description

In this position, you will focus on assisting Danish companies entering or expanding their efforts in the North American market. As part of The Trade Council in North America, you will promote Danish strongholds and solutions within food and agriculture to the North American partners and industry professionals.

Based out of Chicago, you will join the Food & Agriculture Team and work with colleagues in Washington D.C., New York City, Silicon Valley, Houston, and Toronto. Additionally, as a consultant for the Danish companies, you will work towards common result goals, such as value creation, as part of the regional set-up.

In this role your primary responsibilities will be:

  • To support commercial activities within the food and agriculture sector related to dairy production. This includes developing and conducting export promotion activities for Danish companies as well as activities under the framework of a collaboration agreement (MoU) with California related to sustainable dairy production.
  • To execute individual business development engagements with Danish companies interested in the U.S. food and agricultural sector. This may include but is not limited to strategic analysis, stakeholder management, and supporting sales activities.
  • To expand networks and partnerships in Denmark and the U.S. to support the Danish government and Danish company’s interests.
  • To assist the planning and execution of a wide range of commercial activities such as delegations to the US and Denmark, workshops, webinars etc.

Personal characteristics

The candidate should possess an independent drive along with a positive, proactive attitude when engaging in new tasks. The ideal candidate has strong analytical skills, while possessing curiosity and creativity.

Being open, credible and observant are important personal characteristics, just as the ability to manage relations with a broad range of stakeholders, from government officials to Danish partners and local industry professionals, is essential. As the work pace is subject to fluctuation, the candidate should be able to maintain a clear perspective and a flexible mind-set in stressful situations.

Equally being able to manage and track activities in parallel is critical to succeed in this role.

Required qualifications

  • You hold a relevant master's degree.
  • You have a few years of relevant work experience – preferably from a government organization, advocacy group, consultancy or similar.
  • You possess well-developed commercial mindset and understanding of the connection between business and politics.
  • You show great interest in sustainable solutions to promote a green transition of the food and agriculture sector.
  • You are well-versed in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.).

Desired qualifications

  • Knowledge of and/or experience from the U.S. and/or Danish food and agriculture sector.
  • Experience from an international environment.
  • You maintain a strong command of in English, written and spoken.

Employment conditions

  • You will be hired as a “Junior Commercial Advisor” and based at the Consulate General of Denmark in Chicago.
  • Expected start April 1, 2023 or as soon as possible after this date.
  • You will be offered a two-year full time local employment contract with the possibility of extension.
  • Your standard working hours are 37 hours per week with a large degree of flexibility in organizing your daily working hours.
  • You will be entitled to 25 days of paid vacation per year. Benefits and other conditions are based on the local staff handbook.

About the Consulate General

You will be hired as a part of the Trade Department at the Consulate General of Denmark in Chicago, and be included in the Consulate staff team consisting of 17 employees.

You will refer to the team leader of the Food & Agriculture Team in Washington DC.The Trade Council in North America consists of more than 80 employees and represented across the Danish missions in Washington DC, New York City, Chicago, Houston, Toronto, and Silicon Valley.

Spanning eight different business areas within trade, innovation and investments, The Trade Council bridges the gap between Denmark and North America to support transatlantic economic ties, opportunities, and growth.
