Welcome to the official website of the Embassy of Denmark in Washington, DC
The close relationship between Denmark and the United States has a long and storied history. Diplomatic relations between our countries date all the way back to 1801. In fact, the United States has not maintained such long and unbroken diplomatic ties with any other country.
Why is our relationship so special? Both United States and Denmark, after all, enjoy close relationships with other countries as well. The answer is that compared to others, ours is a comprehensive partnership. We have close political and economic ties; we exchange thousands of tourists and students every year; we share a common history; and, above all, we share a common set of values and ideals.
Denmark is proud to be one of the America’s closest allies. Through active participation in a number of international organizations, like the UN and NATO, we work with our American colleagues on solving some of the greatest challenges that we face in the world today: climate change, sustainable development, eradication of poverty, and the fight against terrorism. On average, approximately half the members of the Danish Government visit the United States every year for consultations with their U.S. counterparts and members of the U.S. Congress. U.S. Cabinet secretaries and members of the U.S. Congress also regularly visit Denmark.
The commercial and cultural relations between Denmark and the United States are very close. A number of leading Danish cultural institutions have “Friends” organizations in the United States. And we also welcome the many exchanges between educational institutions in our two countries, which provide an invaluable learning experience for people young and old.
The goal of this Website is to provide easy access to information about Denmark in a number of areas, including business, tourism and visas, politics, history and culture. If there is anything that you cannot find, please let us know, and we will do our best to help you find it.
