Minister for Justice visits NYPD

Minister for Justice Søren Pind spent a day with New York Police Department to gather inspiration and discuss collaboration

On a boat that can sail up to 105 km pr. hour and holds one of the world’s most advanced scuba teams, Minister for Justice Søren Pind set out from pier 11 in Manhattan last week with the New York Police Department. A typical week for the NYPD’s Harbor Unit includes search and rescue missions, evidence recovery – even with the low visibility in New York City’s waters, the scuba team is able to locate things as miniscule as bullet fragments – and counter terrorism efforts. But today is about gathering inspiration.

The minister spent a day with the NYPD to learn more about data-driven policing, incl. the monitoring and evaluation system CompStat, and other tools that might be helpful to the upcoming reform of the Danish police. With the help of systems such as CompStat, overall crime in New York City has decreased 80% since 1990. Every week, the NYPD holds a 4-hour CompStat session for management to target specific trends and evaluate the solutions put in place by the local precincts. The minister also visited the Joint Operations Center, where day-to-day operations are monitored and citywide operations are coordinated in case of large emergencies.

Among other things on the minister’s agenda were meetings at Deputy Commissioner and Chief-level to explore the opportunities for further collaboration between Danish national police and the NYPD. The minister’s visit was the culmination of the first ever direct exchange between the two police forces. For four months, a Danish policeman Jesper Helwig Hansen, has been stationed with the NYPD and together with the Consulate General in New York, Jesper has worked to pave the way for a more formalized collaboration, including knowledge sharing.
