Explore the Christmas Revels: A Nordic Celebration of the Winter Solstice in Music, Dance & Drama

11.17.2016  18:53
The Washington Revels invite you to join a journey into the wonders of Nordic winter traditions! As our families from Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden gather to celebrate the season, let the haunting melodies, breathtaking dance, epic folk legends, and joyful carols get you into the holiday spirit!

''

Discover mythic drama from Finland’s epic Kalevala. As the moon lights the snow, watch the spirited Icelandic Vikivaki as a mysterious stag looks on. Celebrate the Swedish “bringing of the light” by Sankta Lucia with her crown of candles. Watch dancers twirl in the hypnotic Telespringar and thrill to the spectacular leaps of Norway’s Tom Løvli in the Halling dance. Be enchanted by the songs and dances of our children, and participate in their retelling of a beloved Norwegian fairy tale. Delight as we decorate our tree with traditional woven hearts and raise your voice with us in festive Danish toasts and carols.

Revel with our cast of over 100, ages 8–85, as we journey to the Northlands.

Washington Revels’ flagship production, The Christmas Revels, is an annual festive celebration of the Winter Solstice and the return of sun and light after the “shortest day.” Through music, dance and drama, it draws on traditions and rituals from many lands, peoples, and eras — medieval, Renaissance and Victorian English, French, Russian, Roma (Gypsy), African-American, Nordic, American Appalachian, Native American, Renaissance Italian, Québécois, medieval Andalusian  (Sephardic, Arabic and Spanish), southern Balkan (Bulgarian, Greek and Thracian Turkish), Irish, and more.

As a “warmup” to the Christmas Revels, you and your children are also invited to Explore the magical world of Nordic children’s literature at Washington Revels.

On November 15, 22, 29, and December 6 you have the chance to explore the magical world of Nordic children’s literature. The Revelers will journey through books old and new, from different Nordic countries — all delightful for kids of any age, but mainly aimed at 2-5 year-olds.

Enjoy stories from Denmark’s Hans Christian Anderson, Sweden’s Astrid Lindgren’s Pippi Longstocking, and Elsa Beskow, whose early 1900’s-era books are still loved by children today.

Laugh along the Tomtes journey to get their Christmas porridge, be charmed by a girl’s discovery of Snow Children, learn about troubles brewed by witch Queen Louhi’s mischievous ways. Delight in the capers of Findus the cat, who always manages to make life more difficult, and yet more full of love and joy, for poor old Petterson.

These Nordic characters will charm their way into your and your children’s hearts and live there forever!

Washington Revels is an established cultural institution in the greater Washington area, dedicated to reviving and celebrating cultural traditions — music, dance, storytelling,
drama and ritual — that have bound communities together over the ages and across the globe.

''

The Nordic stories will be read every Tuesday morning from November 15 to December 13 from 10:00 am-11:00 am. Open-house style, come whenever you like and stay as long as you like!

Address: Washington Revels, 531 Dale Drive, Silver Spring, 20910
